A new medical textbook on group B Strep – the first dedicated clinical textbook on the subject – has been launched.
Co-edited by Professor Philip Steer and GBSS Chief Executive Jane Plumb, the book brings together clinical expertise, research evidence and family perspectives to support better understanding, prevention and care.
Healthcare professionals, researchers, families and supporters gathered in London on 8 July to celebrate the publication of this major new textbook, Group B Streptococcus in Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Neonatal Period.
Published by Elsevier, the book explores the prevention, diagnosis and management of group B Strep infection in babies and examines the evidence underpinning maternity and neonatal care. It draws on the expertise of leading clinicians, researchers and other specialists from across the UK and internationally.
A distinctive feature of the book is its inclusion of family experiences alongside the science and clinical evidence. Throughout the text, personal stories highlight the real-life impact of group B Strep infection and the importance of ensuring that evidence is understood, communicated and applied in ways that support families and improve care.

Jane Plumb, Chief Executive of GBSS and co-editor of the book, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to see this book published. It brings together the best available evidence, expert clinical knowledge and family perspectives in one place. We hope it will be widely used by healthcare professionals, students, researchers and policymakers, helping to inform practice and support better outcomes for babies and families.”
GBSS extends its sincere thanks to Professor Philip Steer, the chapter authors, the families who shared their experiences, and Irwin Mitchell for generously hosting the launch event.
The book is aimed at midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists, GPs, students, researchers, healthcare leaders and policymakers, as well as anyone with an interest in evidence-based maternity and newborn care.
