Mum Jo writes “I was aware of GBS due to a friend raising awareness on social media after her niece passed away at 2 weeks old following GBS infection complications. I ordered a private test as the test wasn’t available on the NHS. I had pre-eclampsia and knew my baby would arrive early so I did the simple test at 35 weeks, which came back positive.
Luckily the results came through quickly as two days after the results were text to me, I went into labour. I was immediately admitted and managed to have 2 rounds of antibiotics before Robyn was born, at 36 weeks gestation weighing 5lb 12oz. The hospital was great and we were both monitored carefully. After a spell in hospital to treat her jaundice, we were home safely.
I’m so glad I took the test – £38 is a price worth paying, as who knows what the outcome would have been had I not had the antibiotics. I just wish more people were aware of GBS so I am now trying to raise awareness, as my friend has done previously (and continues to do). Robyn is now a healthy bouncing 8 month old, the apple of our eye!”
