“I’ve been following your page for 2 years after ‘This Morning’ interviewed Iwan Thomas about his experience with his son being diagnosed with group B Strep infection. I just wanted to let you know that when I found out I was pregnant, because I’ve been following your page and always seeing your posts it reminded me that I needed to get a test, I ordered a test and it confirmed I was positive.
I received a course of antibiotics in labour, however, because I gave birth within 30 minutes of my waters breaking they unfortunately didn’t go through my system in time. As a result, Jacob was monitored closely by the amazing midwives at Birmingham women’s hospital for his first 24 hours of life – every 2 hours they would take observations and were happy to discharge me after this period.
They told me to look out for signs and also the signs of late-onset Strep B infection.
I was fortunate that in my case the infection wasn’t passed to Jacob. Nevertheless, when my friends, sisters, cousins and work colleagues find out they are pregnant, I always advise them to get a test and to follow you guys for more information!
I have to say though, that every time I mention strep B to anyone, I can never quite believe that nobody has even heard of the infection. I will continue to spread the word to moms-to- be for as long as I’m living!!
Thank you so much for providing a platform to share my story.
Take care All. x ”
