Mum Nikki tells us,
“I had a full term no complication pregnancy. I gave birth vaginally with gas and air and pethidine. Amy Louise was born on the 26 February 2003. Her initial APGAR scores were perfect. It was noted her temperature was a little low so we were told it would be checked regularly. We were on the post natal ward and Amy was asleep. I had a nap and woke as I thought she may be hungry.
Amy was kind of shivering in the crib. I asked the nurse when her temp was checked last, but she just grabbed her and said she’s not breathing properly and rushed off with her. No one seemed to know what was going on and it was over half an hour before anyone came. I was taken to SCBU and she was in an incubator with wires everywhere and they said she was struggling to breathe.
She then suffered a collapsed lung they said she had pneumonia and were giving her antibiotics. Then her other lung burst. They said her lungs were too infected. Then a staff member spoke to me and said she could use a carbon dioxide machine in another hospital and were willing to transfer then she said “there’s no dignity dying in the back of an ambulance in the middle of the road.” I held her as they disconnected her. 27 hours and 40 minutes old.”
