We warmly welcome the World Health Organization’s (WHO) newly released guideline on preventing group B Strep infection in newborn babies. This is a significant step forward in maternal and neonatal health and a testament to the tireless effort of healthcare professionals and advocates worldwide.
Embracing Universal Screening
One of the most notable recommendations in the WHO guideline is the endorsement of universal screening for pregnant women to prevent early-onset group B Strep (EOGBS) disease in newborn babies.
The guideline highlights that universal test-based screening, as opposed to a risk-based approach, is probably associated with a reduction in EOGBS infection rates in newborns. The WHO Guideline Development Group acknowledges “the challenges with costs and the feasibility of implementing antenatal universal screening, particularly in low-resource settings.”
