On average in the UK, it’s estimated that two babies a day will develop group B Strep infection. Sadly, every week one baby dies and another recovers with lifelong disability.
Instead of golden hour, newborn cuddles and precious time together, too many families have this time stolen from them by group B Strep.
But, worryingly, we don’t know the true scale of families affected by group B Strep because the NHS doesn’t count them properly.
Research has suggested that as many as a fifth of group B Strep infections in babies simply don’t get reported centrally, meaning families’ heartbreaking experiences aren’t counted.
Group B Strep Support is calling on the Government to commit to counting all group B Strep infections, so families’ heartbreaking experiences are recognised, and we can properly measure whether the NHS’ current prevention strategies are working.
