We welcome the inclusion of group B Strep in a maternity policy motion adopted by Liberal Democrat members at their autumn conference in Brighton last weekend.
The motion is now Liberal Democrat policy. It includes a commitment to ensure that pregnant women and people receive clear, evidence-based information about group B Strep, and that those who want to know their GBS carriage status can access a GBS-specific test through the NHS.
During the debate, Alison Bennett MP highlighted the work of Group B Strep Support and the experiences of families affected by group B Strep infection. It is encouraging to see the experiences and voices of our community helping to keep group B Strep on the national agenda and part of wider discussions around maternity care, awareness and prevention.

Progress through collective action
Developments like this don’t happen overnight. They are built through years of improving awareness, campaigning, sharing experiences and keeping group B Strep on the agenda.
Families, healthcare professionals, supporters and campaigners have all played a part in increasing understanding of group B Strep and the importance of better access to information and testing.
While this policy does not in itself change current NHS practice, it is an encouraging step. It reflects the importance of informed choice during pregnancy and recognition of the role that GBS testing can play in preventing early-onset group B Strep infection in newborns.
More Work Still to Do
There is still more work needed to ensure that all expectant parents receive the information they need about group B Strep and can make informed decisions about their care and that of their baby.
However, seeing group B Strep included in the maternity policy of a UK political party demonstrates that awareness is continuing to grow and that the experiences of families affected by group B Strep are being heard.
We will keep campaigning for better awareness of group B Strep, clear and accessible information for expectant parents, and greater access to GBS-specific testing.
What happens next?
We welcome this commitment and now want to see action.
We are calling on the Government and all political parties to support clear, evidence-based information about group B Strep and equitable access to appropriate GBS-specific testing through the NHS.
With the results of the GBS3 trial expected and the UK National Screening Committee reviewing its position, 2026 is an important year for the future of GBS prevention.
