Louise took part in the Great North Run 2022 and was so pleased to have been able to raise some awareness of group B Strep after she tested positive by chance during her pregnancy.
Louise told us “At 36 weeks pregnant with my daughter I found out I had group B Strep after I’d been in for a swab to check if my waters had broken. I was informed (by text!) that I was positive for GBS and this was the first I’d ever heard of it. At first I was completely distraught and read loads of horror stories online until I found the charity website which was a huge relief, my mind was put at rest and actually I realised it was quite a positive thing that I knew that I was a carrier.
I was on IV antibiotics throughout labour to prevent it being passed onto my baby. We were told we’d be in hospital for at least 24 hours following her birth to be under extra supervision and I was well informed of all the signs and symptoms of infection to look out for in my baby. I don’t like to think about the significantly different outcome we could have had if we weren’t aware of GBS.
I’m so thankful I found GBSS and my mind was put to rest. I’m determined to continue to raise awareness of group B Strep in pregnancy and put an end to such a preventable cause of infection in babies!
I’m was really looking forward to taking part in the Great North run and wearing the GBSS t shirt with pride.”
