Working to stop GBS infection in babies
There is an ongoing trial into testing pregnant women for group B Strep, called the GBS3 Trial.
The GBS3 trial is the best chance of getting the evidence for routine testing for group B Strep to be introduced in the UK.
We need 50 more hospitals to sign up for the GBS3 trial to succeed.
Please, will you take five minutes to email your MP and ask them to ensure your local hospitals take part?
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months.
Most of these infections are preventable.
The following day I was back at the hospital for 6 am and Hugo had turned a corner (I had left my expressed milk and he’d been fed through the tube overnight).
The lumbar puncture came back clear; phew, no meningitis but yes, sepsis – late-onset GBS infection.
The doctors praised us for our quick reaction to Hugo's unusual symptoms and said that we had, in essence, saved him from contracting meningitis and undoubtedly his life.
