Our Medical Advisory Panel’s key recommendations:

For our medical advisory panel’s key recommendations for better prevention for GBS infection in newborn babies, click here. Key points include:

  • GBS Bacteriuria – Treat with antibiotics on diagnosis. Retest 7-10 days after treatment. Alert the mother’s delivery team (as the GBS infection is more invasive), and so the risk of transmission is increased.
  • Vaginal/ Rectal GBS – No treatment before labour (antenatal antibiotic treatment has proved ineffective against eliminating GBS carriage and reducing GBS transmission during childbirth). Alert the mother’s delivery team – intrapartum antibiotics should be considered.
  • GBS Prophylaxis – Intrapartum intravenous antibiotics at start of labour and at intervals until delivery (Penicillin G or Clindamycin if penicillin-allergic).
  • GBS Tests – NHS tests for GBS carriage give an unacceptably high proportion of false negatives (up to 50%). More sensitive tests are available privately. Click here for the latest on providers of tests which follow PHE’s SMI B 58 guidelines on how to process them.

Several presentations available to download on GBS from here.

‘Gold Standard’ ECM tests for GBS carriage

A list of hospitals that offer ECM testing for GBS carriage is here, together with the private laboratories which follow Public Health England’s UK SMI B 58 on processing swabs for GBS carriage.
